Mobility challenges can come at us rapidly or they can be a slow, inevitable creeping up on us. If they’re the later, there’s often a moment of realization that the one you’re caring for will have when they are forced to realize they no longer have full use of the home they’ve loved for many years. A stair lift solution from Living Free Home will help, but we’ll get to that later. For now, I just wanted you to know there’s a solution.

(skip to a helpful article on how a stair lift can keep your loved one safe in the winter months)

A major cause of mobility issues is falls. These often result in hip injuries, the most common kind of injury in the elderly as that particular bone structure is both fragile and exposed, and so it’s often the point of impact in a fall. In these cases, the moment you realize you’ll have a mobility issue is very clear, very sudden. There’s not eventual dawning of realization. You simply know you’ll need solutions like a stair lift, walk-in shower and other essential equipment.

But the slow creeping attack of arthritis and other aging issues can drag on to the point where a loved one simply spends less and less time on the stairway. One day the decision to sleep on the couch with a comforter over them is simply easier. Then, perhaps they do the same thing the next night. Eventually, they’ve moved a few articles of clothing downstairs into the home office, more blankets for the couch.

This is the sort of issue my aging parents are now going through. They’re in their 70s, living in a split level home, and they have to go up and down two small sets of stairs at least 10 times a day. I keep asking, but they keep saying a stair lift is simply not necessary. But my arthritic mom is definitely ready for a chair lift, if for no other reason than to make her life more convenient. For her, I think it’s a matter of not wanting to admit she’s reaching that point. She’s caught in that slow decline I’m talking about, and we’re all watching it and waiting.

When you see a photo of a person on a stair lift from Living Free Home, they’re smiling. That’s because they’re in a marketing photo. But when you see someone on their very own stair lift in their home, they have an even bigger grin on their face; and it’s not because they’re zooming up and down the stairway – they don’t go that fast. It’s because they get the full use of their home again, for a surprisingly low cost. The slow creep of arthritis won’t stop, but it also won’t completely change every aspect of their life either. Their stair lift has lifted their spirits and that optimism has the power to literally make them feel better.

If you’re caring for someone who is living with the slow advance of age or arthritis-related mobility issues, consider a stair lift solution from Living Free Home.

By Carol O’Dell, author of Mothering Mother

Aging in Place might still mean a move—just near where you already live.

I have a dear friend whose wife died recently. They live on the outskirts of Boston and love where they live. He’s turning 80 and living in a 4,000 square foot house on ten acres. It’s been a lovely homestead for many years but now that his children are scattered across the country and his wife is gone, he’s beginning to realize he doesn’t need this much space—and it’s becoming more of a burden than a blessing with all of the upkeep.

The dilemma is he likes his community. He’s a longstanding member of his church. He sings in the choir. He volunteers at several local shelters and is on the board of a charity he believes in. He likes his local coffee shop, barber, doctors and he especially enjoys the parks and bike trails he frequents on the weekends (when it’s not the dead of winter).

He’s considered moving closer to one of his children but he can’t see himself being happy there. Starting over with friends and activities is challenging—and he doesn’t want to feel that he’s an appendage to his children’s lives. He loves visiting them, but he really wants to stay where he’s at.

The solution?
To find a smaller place nearby.

Like most areas of the country, my friend lives in a diverse community. There are condos, apartments, smaller houses, as well as graduated living and retirement communities. He has many viable choices.

Some important considerations are accessibility, safety, home features that allow for physical challenges and changes, and personal preferences.

My friend and I have had several discussions and he’s decided on a ground floor condo that’s near his church and other activities he already enjoys. He’s thought ahead and he could even bike to many of these places, and later when he chooses to no longer drive, he could get a taxi and it would be affordable. He thought about the things that make it home: a small yard for gardening, a fireplace, a decent size kitchen, a back porch, and a home office. He liked that the condo had a heated pool and workout facility (which eliminates gym cost). He also preferred that his bedroom be on the ground floor.

The place he’s considering has most of these amenities along with two bedrooms upstairs. One he plans on using as a guest room when his kids visit, and the other is for a home office. He’s planning on installing a stairlift which will give him easy accessibility since he has a bit of arthritis in his knees. He also likes the idea that if he ever needs home health care, he has the room.

“I like this condo—where it’s located, the grounds, and the nearby conveniences, and a stairlift allows me to enjoy all of my living space.”

He’s moving in the first of January and renting out his home—for now—until the market improves. He’s already excited about his new digs and feels he made the right choice by aging in place—or at least aging nearby.

Every year caregivers’ worries go up as the temperature goes down. The simple reason is that it’s colder outside, so elderly loved ones spend much more time indoors. The first way to begin alleviating your concerns is by asking Living Free Home to conduct an extensive, FREE Home Accessibility Analysis. We’ll cover every inch of your loved ones’ home to point out any danger areas, like stairways. Then we’ll offer solutions like a stair lift to ensure your aging parents can get up and down to the other floors of their home safely.

(skip to a video demo of a stair lift from Living Free Home)

If you think about it, there are many ways that the long months of winter can be made safer indoors. Whether your loved one is suffering from arthritis, hip issues, back pain or other mobility challenges, Living Free Home offers lots of devices to make the winter easier.

You can learn more by calling 1-888-545-4846 or by clicking the links above. We can install a stair lift anywhere in New Jersey, Metro New York City (NYC), Boston and surrounding areas, and Philadelphia and surrounding areas.

So many parts of the home become more difficult when you’re there more often.

There’s no place in the home, besides perhaps the bed, that elderly loved ones spend more time than in their favorite reading chair. If that describes someone you know, consider one of our lift chairs. We offer a wide range of fabrics in a full price range.

The kitchen is fraught with dangers for a mobility challenged person. For instance, reaching up onto higher shelves can be downright dangerous. Living Free Home offers reach extenders that can help your loved one reach up onto the highest shelves, extending their reach over 3 feet.

Getting into and out of the home in the winter presents particular challenges. We recommend a wheelchair ramp for those with walkers or wheelchairs. They’re also much easier to shovel than stairs.

Remember that a stair lift makes an amazing holiday gift, (though it’s not easy to get down the chimney). Here’s how the process works –
One of our hand picked certified technicians will visit you at your home to carefully measure your stairways for a stair lift and evaluate the optimal solution to suit your elderly loved one’s needs. All our technicians carry complete credentials and Photo ID to provide you the kind of reassurance that’s made Living Free Home so trusted by others. Most visits require no more than 30 minutes to complete. That same day, right at your home, we’ll present you with a complete quotation on the cost of the stair lift and cost of installation. We can have your stair lift installed in as little as 48 hours* from the time we visit your home — at no additional cost! *Excludes Custom Models

Our Living Free Home Low Price Guarantee: Despite the fact that most other retailers do NOT offer installation, let alone FREE installation, we will always beat competitor prices. If you find a lower price on the exact same product, including delivery and installation, we will beat that price by 10%.

As we approach the end of this important month, please remember to thank anyone you know who is caring for an aging person. Here, we post just a couple excerpts from our President’s note on National Family Caregiver Month -

“The true strength of the American family finds its roots in an unwavering commitment to care for one another.”

“Every day, family caregivers assist loved ones with tasks ranging from personal care and homemaking, to transportation and financial assistance. As the foundation of America’s long-term care system, these individuals give millions of Americans the peace of mind and security that only family can provide.”

If you haven’t already, please review the entire note at this link -

(By Carol O’Dell, author of “Mothering Mother”)

My mom called it pride—why she didn’t want to use a cane or a walker. I called it stubbornness. We were locked in a battle of the wills. No matter how I coerced, encouraged or bribed, my mom had zero plans to ever use a walking “aide” other than me. I called myself her human walker. As her only daughter and full-time caregiver, http://caregiver.org/caregiver/jsp/home.jsp I finally had to say no. My back started hurting due to all the caregiving duties I was performing—lifting, getting her in and out of cars, baths, and picking her up after falls. Caregivers suffer from back pain caregiver-injuries and I finally realized that if I didn’t start saying “no” and insisting she use a walking aide that I wouldn’t be able to physically care for her for very long.

My mom had Parkinson’s, which made her dizzy, and Alzheimer’s. I called her my Weeble (Remember that commercial, Weebles wobble but they don’t fall down). She fell but she never broke a bone—amazing.

It took me standing my ground. She really wanted to use me instead of a walker.

I started negotiations: I promised her that we wouldn’t use the walker at church or around her friends (that was what she was most worried about). I encouraged her come with me to the home health supply store (insert proper Living Free link here) to pick it out. I told her we could paint it or decorate it. I used humor, sweetness, playfulness, but I was determined—for the both of us). I promised I’d take her out to eat afterward—she chose Krystal’s for their steamy hamburgers and senior special). I would have promised her a visit from Santa or the tooth fairy if it would have helped!

Finally, she agreed. I tried to be as kind and thoughtful as I could be. My mom was an elegant woman, a minister, and a respected member of her community. I assured her that she was still all those things and that it’s okay to get a little help once in awhile.

If you’re going through the same thing with your spouse or elder parent, remember to be patient—and persistent. A walker or cane is a healthier solution for you—and a safe solution for them. Take the time to find out why they’re saying “no.” Listen with your heart and your head. (But stick to your guns—with kindness, humor and big dose of tenacity).

By Carol O’Dell, author of “Mothering Mother”

Pain, aching, dull, joints are the hallmark of arthritis. You fight it as best you can—with meds, vitamins and supplements, hydrotherapy, gentle exercise, and even using canes or walkers for assistance. And maybe you can’t play racquet ball anymore, but you’re enjoying golf—and maybe you’ve traded your hiking boots for a hot tub. That’s okay, but make sure those are choices you want to make. Your home should be a place where you can get around, enjoy each room and area of your home and yard, and it’s worth the investment. A stair lift might give you back parts of your home you thought you had to give up. You don’t.

Many of us have offices on our second floors, keep memorabilia, have spacious master bedroom suites, walk-in closets and bathrooms with double sinks, separate tubs and showers and other amenities. Don’t settle for staying downstairs and making do with the guest room and guest bath—or “living” in your recliner.

Stair lifts work for not only the upstairs, but also the downstairs. You may have a split level home (basically three levels with two shorter staircases going either way from the main living floor). For others, it’s their basement they’d like to enjoy again. Is that your “man cave?” Do you enjoy your tools, vintage car, pool room, extra den or hobby room on a lower level? Enjoying life is important for your physical and emotional health and the more you can entertain yourself in your own home with hobbies and activities enhances your life and staves off boredom and frustration.

More and more people are staying home and enjoying the amenities they’ve chosen. A stair lift gives you access and makes it easy to get around without wearing out your joints, or adding pain to days or risking falls. You might have to deal with arthritis but it doesn’t have to cripple your life.

This time of year, Caregivers want to feel good about their aging parents. But you need to remember your needs as well. You need time to go to the grocery store, time to work out, time to deal with your children and, dare I say it, time to read a book! A stair lift is one of many solutions Living Free Home can offer which will give you the peace of mind that your aging parent is safe in their own home. A stair lift is a secure, safe way for elderly parents to get up and down their stairs, maintaining full use of their entire home despite hip issues, arthritis, dizziness, etc.

Living Free Home are experts in stair lift solutions. We have three locations where you can meet us in person and ask to see one of our stairlifts in action -
Westfield – 317 South Avenue W., Westfield, NJ 07090
Madison – 125 Park Avenue, Madison, NJ 07940
Boston Showroom – 401 VFW Dr., Rockland, MA 02370

Give the elderly one you love the gift of the full use of their home.

As our elderly loved ones age and their mobility begins to deteriorate, many choose to live on only one floor of their home rather than risk the stairway. This restriction takes a large part of the joy out of life for someone who’s lived there for many years. A stair lift from Living Free Home is a simple, economical solution which will give both you and the aging person you care for the security of knowing no accidents will occur on such a dangerous part of the home.

So many memories are up those stairs.

Imagine those old photos kept upstairs in the box under the guest room bed. Or the bundle of letters you wrote your parents after you left home for the first time to begin your life as an adult. Image the view out of the back window where they used to sit and read books. Think how important that sewing room is and how they had it set up just the way they wanted. All these important parts of their life are in the upstairs rooms of their home and they’ll miss them dearly if they can’t get to them any time they want.

But more importantly, when a caregive can’t be in the home with their elderly loved one they can’t be sure that the perceived need to get up those stairs won’t outweigh the risks in the mind of the one they care for.

A stairlift is not permanent. When we install them, they’re also easy for you to get un-installed should you move or want to sell it. And the installation, while very secure, is usually not very disruptive to the stairway. Your durable and dependable stair lift only requires a minimal amount of hardware to secure it onto the stairway.

The best way to start is by calling 1-888-545-4846 to ask questions or to set up a free appointment for a Home Accessibility Analysis.

We can install a stair lift anywhere in New Jersey, Metro New York City (NYC), Boston and surrounding areas, and Philadelphia and surrounding areas.

How the process works

One of our highly skilled, experienced and certified technicians will visit you at your home to personally measure for your stair lift and evaluate the best solution to your home’s specific needs. All our technicians carry complete credentials and Photo ID to provide you the kind of reassurance that’s made Living Free Home so trusted by others. The visit itself should take no more than 30 minutes. We make it simple. That same day, right at your home, we’ll provide you with a complete quote on the cost of the stair lift and installation. We can have your stair lift installed in as little as 48 hours* from the time we visit your home — at no additional cost!
(*Excludes Custom Models)

Living Free Home offers a Low Price Guarantee: Surprisingly, most other retailers do NOT offer installation, or even FREE installation. Even though we offer both of these free, we will still always beat our competitors’ prices. If you find a lower price on the exact same product, including delivery and installation, we will beat that price by 10%. (“Same” is defined as an item of the same styling, by the same manufacturer and same item number.)

You deserve a gift this year.

This holiday season, remember how difficult it is to be a caregiver and give yourself a bit of peace of mind with a stair lift or other great idea from Living Free Home. If you’d like to see how little space on the actual stairway one of our stair lift models takes up, stop by one of our locations at the address above and spend some time with one of our helpful sales people.

Arthritis is the cause of a great deal of confusion among the aging and those who care for them, and not just because it’s difficult to spell. One reason Arthritis (artritis, arthritus, arthiritis, arthritic, osteoarthritis, or however else you might spell it) is so difficult when the first symptoms appear is that there are over 100 different types, and they might show up anywhere there’s a joint in the body.

The difficulty caused in movement is where we come in. We’re Living Free Home, experts in stair lift solutions for those aging with arthritis. A stair lift from Living Free Home will be an important part of helping someone you know suffering from artritis (arthritis) stay mobile longer and living more freely in the home they love.

Arthritis, the deterioration of the cartilage which protects the joint, results in great pain with the normal movement of that joint. So if you or an aging person you care for is experiencing arthritus (arthritis) in the joints of the knees, their ability to navigate stairs will be very much impeded. The way many people choose to get around this problem is by living only on one floor of their home. This restriction of movement within the home takes much joy out of life for someone who’s lived there for many years and decades. A stair lift from Living Free Home is a simple, economical and fast solution that will give both you and the aging person you care for the security of knowing no accidents will occur on such a dangerous part of the home.

An investment in a stair lift for your home is not a bad investment either.

How a stair lift can help you stay safely mobile in your home with arthritis

Unfortunately, arthritis is a painful disease and you’ll have to be inventive to find ways to make life easier while dealing with it. A stair lift from Living Free Home is one way to help, and we offer many other solutions that can make dealing with arthritis much easier. For instance, if you have arthritis, you may find it very difficult to reach up high to get things. Living Free Home offers reach devices and other solutions to make this easier. If arthritis has made getting into and out of chairs difficult, consider one of our lift chairs. We offer a wide range of fabrics in a full price range.

There are over 100 different kinds of arthritis, which doesn’t just affect older Americans, it can begin to show up earlier. The most common form, osteoarthritis – a type of degenerative joint disease – is caused by trauma to the joint, infection of the joint, or simply age. Other kinds of arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and autoimmune diseases in which the body attacks itself. Septic arthritis is caused by joint infection.

If arthritis has made getting into and out of chairs difficult, consider one of our lift chairs. We offer a wide range of fabrics in a price that’s affordable to meet your needs. A lift chair from Living Free Home is a beautiful piece of furniture and a great value. Keep us in mind for ramps, too. We make this process just as easy as installing a stair lift.

Our Living Free Home Low Price Guarantee: Despite the fact that most other retailers do NOT offer installation, let alone FREE installation, we will always beat competitor prices. If you find a lower price on the exact same product, including delivery and installation, we will beat that price by 10%.
